Winter Weather Alert Three Waves of Northeast Monsoon Set to Bring Chilly and Damp Christmas Across Taiwan

Taiwan is preparing for a chilly and damp Christmas as three waves of the Northeast Monsoon are set to impact the region within the next 10 days. Weather expert Chia Hsin-hsing from the Taiwan Integrated Disaster Prevention Engineering Consultant Company has forecasted these developments.

Forecast of Northeast Monsoon Waves

The first wave of the Northeast Monsoon is expected to arrive from Sunday, December 21, to Monday, December 22. This will bring localized rainfall to the northern regions and parts of the eastern coast.

The subsequent waves will occur on Wednesday through Thursday, December 24 to 25, and again on Saturday to Sunday, December 27 to 28. The most significant weather is anticipated on Christmas Day, when increased moisture will contribute to relatively cool and damp conditions.

Detailed Weather Outlook

  • December 20: Light rain in western coastal areas, Hengchun Peninsula, and southern mountains, as well as Hualien and Taitung.
  • December 21-22: North of Taoyuan and Yilan will experience sporadic rain.
  • December 23: Brief rains expected from the northeastern coast to Hualien.
  • December 24-25: Effects of the stronger northeast monsoon will lead to more localized rain.
  • December 26: Light rains in northern areas and mountainous regions.
  • December 27-28: Continuing precipitation, particularly in northern coastal areas and Hualien.

Long-Term Temperature Trends

Looking ahead, temperatures across Taiwan are predicted to remain normal to slightly cooler throughout early January. Increased rainfall is anticipated in Yilan as well, with forecasts suggesting a higher likelihood of precipitation during this period.

Residents are advised to dress warmly and carry rain gear when venturing outdoors during this holiday season. The unusual weather patterns reflect the ongoing impact of the Northeast Monsoon, which is typical during this time of year.
