Surrey and White Rock Unlikely to See a White Christmas in Lower Mainland

Residents of Surrey and White Rock are facing uncertainty regarding the likelihood of a white Christmas this year in the Lower Mainland. According to meteorologist Brian Proctor from Environment and Climate Change Canada, the forecast indicates a minimal chance of snow accumulation during the holiday period.

Weather Forecast for the Holiday Season

Flurries may be observed on the night of December 23 and the morning of December 24. However, if they occur, they are expected to be wet flurries predominantly at higher elevations. Proctor noted, “We’re transitioning into a far more westerly flow aloft, typical for this time of year.”

Temperature Trends

The weather is shifting towards more seasonal temperatures, with a gradual decline in both daytime and nighttime temperatures. Proctor emphasized that this change aligns more closely with typical December conditions. Despite the transition, the area will continue experiencing rain and windy conditions.

Potential Snowfall Areas

  • Higher elevations such as Panorama Ridge
  • Surrey highlands
  • North Delta
  • North Shore
  • Coquitlam

The probability of a white Christmas remains low, with estimates suggesting only an eight percent chance of snowfall in Vancouver. Proctor concluded that while some wet flurries are possible, residents should prepare for seasonal rain and breezy conditions instead.
